# Network Deep Dive: History Channel

On Memorial Day, History kicked off *Grant*, a three-night miniseries focused on the legendary Civil War general and U.S. president Ulysses S. Grant. It’s an adaptation of historian Ron Chernow’s biography, executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. 

We put together a deep dive on History and its latest miniseries, using analysis from [Inscape](http://inscape.tv/?ref=tvrev2beta2.ghost.io) and [iSpot](http://ispot.tv/?ref=tvrev2beta2.ghost.io), to surface viewership trends and advertising highlights. 

**Viewership Trends via Inscape**

First, some topline stats for History via Inscape, the TV data company with insights from a panel of more than 14 million smart TVs: Of all the active smart TVs that Inscape measured in the last 35 days, History reached 23.26%, making it No. 15 for percent network reach.

Of all the minutes watched by active smart TVs in the last 35 days, 1.37% of the time was spent on History, making it No. 20 for network share duration.

Here’s a look at History’s audience location by DMA. Hotspots of viewership include Marquette, MI; Glendive, MT; Alpena, MI; Zanesville, OH; Charlestown-Huntington, WV; Bluefield-Beckley-Oak Hill, WV, among others.

When it comes to other networks that History viewers are most likely to watch, Science Channel leads, followed by American Heroes Channel, FYI, Discovery and MotorTrend.

Based on the average percent of TVs watching, the top programs on History so far this year include *The Curse of Oak Island*, *Swamp People*, *American Pickers*, *Pawn Stars* and *Ancient Aliens*.

When it comes to other shows watched by History viewers off-network, programs from Discovery-owned networks lead: *Expedition Unknown*, *Outback Opal Hunters*, *Forbidden History*, *Unearthed* and *Curse of the Bermuda Triangle*.

Inscape has minute-by-minute viewing data for anything that airs on TV. Below, a look at the *Grant* premiere on May 25\. You can see how tune-in gradually increased over the course of the first hour, peaking a bit after the midway point before starting to decline.

On May 25, *Grant* was the No. 13 show based on the percent of TVs watching. It fell to No. 33 on May 26 and No. 34 on May 27\. 

When it comes to other shows that *Grant* viewers are likely to watch (both on- and off-network), viewers favor other History shows including *The Curse of Oak Island*, *Pawn Stars*, *Ancient Aliens: Declassified* and *American Pickers*. News programs — including multiple ones from Fox News — also make the top 20 list: *Bill Hemmer Reports*, *The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino*, *Morning Joe*, *Outnumbered Overtime With Harris Faulkner* and *Life, Liberty & Levin*.

**Advertising Trends via iSpot**

According to [iSpot.tv,](http://ispot.tv/?ref=tvrev2beta2.ghost.io) the always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company, there were 38 billion TV ad impressions served on History from Jan. 1 through May 27, representing a 10.43% increase from the same time period in 2019\. History is ranked No. 17 for TV ad impressions so far this year (during the same time period in 2019, the network was ranked No. 20 for impressions). 

Shows with the highest impression-counts on History include *American Pickers* (8.1 billion impressions), *Ancient Aliens* (4.1 billion), *The Curse of Oak Island* (2.8 billion), *Pawn Stars* (2.7 billion) and *Swamp People* (2.4 billion).

Brands with the highest impression-counts on History include Geico (1 billion), Liberty Mutual (934.4 million), Little Caesars Pizza (552.7 million), Burger King (522.9 million) and The Home Depot (505 million). 

Looking specifically at *Grant*, there were 330.5 million TV ad impressions served during the three episodes (that number doesn’t include reruns that aired before new episodes). The iSpot Attention Score, which measures the percentage of an ad that is played across a TV device, was 92.91, with ads during *Grant* 4% less likely to be interrupted than average. 

Top brands by TV ad impressions (not counting History promos) were Southern New Hampshire University (13.3 million impressions), Metro by T-Mobile (12.7 million), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (11 million), Liberty Mutual (10 million) and Carl’s Jr. (9.2 million).
