In the latest episode of AI and Outcomes in partnership with OpenAP, we sat down with **Sean Muller**, founder and CEO, **iSpot**, to get his take on the industry's AI conversation and how it’s happening in the wrong language, focused on the wrong layer of the tech stack.

*This interview has been edited for length and clarity.*

**TVREV: Everyone seems to be building AI agents right now. What has to happen before fully agentic advertising actually becomes reality?**

**Sean Muller:** The first requirement isn't another AI model—it's trusted data. If AI is making decisions about where to allocate media, which audiences to reach, or which creative to serve, those decisions have to be grounded in data the marketplace already trusts. That means trusted measurement, trusted optimization signals and trusted outcomes. Once that foundation exists, you can connect into DSPs, publishers and the broader advertising ecosystem. But without reliable measurement underneath it all, automation simply accelerates bad decisions instead of good ones.

**TVREV: "Outcomes" has become one of advertising's favorite buzzwords. How do you define it?**

**Sean Muller:** Outcomes begin with understanding what the business is actually trying to accomplish. For one advertiser that might be online sales. For another, it might be store visits, subscriptions, or product purchases. The KPI determines how success should be measured.

From there, we think about outcomes in two dimensions. There's the short-term impact—the immediate lift or conversion generated by a campaign. But there's also the long-term effect on brand equity, purchase intent and consideration. Great advertising does both, and if you're only measuring one side of that equation, you're missing a significant portion of its value.

**TVREV: Where does audience measurement fit into that framework?**

**Sean Muller:** It's foundational, because every outcome model depends on accurately understanding who actually saw the advertising. If audience measurement isn't consistent across platforms, every conversion metric built on top of it becomes less reliable.

People often separate audience measurement from outcomes measurement, but they're really inseparable. Accurate outcomes begin with accurate audience measurement.

**TVREV: If AI increasingly automates campaign execution, what becomes more valuable?**

**Sean Muller:** The data itself. Building AI workflows will eventually become a commodity. Every major platform will have them. The real differentiator will be the quality of the information those workflows are using to make decisions.

In many ways, that hasn't changed at all. Advertising has always rewarded companies with better data. AI simply makes the consequences of good—or bad—data much more significant.

**TVREV: There's a perception that AI makes creative less important. You seem to believe the opposite.**

**Sean Muller:** Absolutely. At iSpot we often say, "Creative + Audience = Outcomes." Audience measurement tells you whether you reached the right people. Creative determines whether those people actually respond.

When marketers shift their attention from reach to business outcomes, creative becomes just as important as targeting. The companies that learn how to optimize both together will outperform those that focus on either one in isolation.
